The distance learning website for musculoskeletal sonography

Scientific basis

In several European countries, there are well developed training schemes to permit rheumatologists to develop skills and experience in musculoskeletal ultrasound.
In Italy, rheumatology trainees must witness at least 200 ultrasound examinations and perform at least 60 scans as the first operator.
The musculoskeletal sonography training course designed by the Rheumatology Department of the Universitą Politecnicą delle Marche is unique of its kind in Italy and is specifically focused on the rheumatologists’ specific needs.
The course covers core sonographic knowledge, fundamental methodology for both diagnostic and therapeutic applications in Rheumatology and practical exposure to the performance of musculoskeletal ultrasound.
At the foundation of the course is important hands-on experience under the supervision of expert tutors. The course is divided into three sections.
The first and third sections  are residential and the second is designed as a distance learning experience.

At the core of the success of this educational program is the inception of a web-based forum to allow access to a compendium of ultrasound imagery together with an interactive platform between tutor and trainee.

We now open this website and interactive forum to the wider body of rheumatologists worldwide who are interested in developing their skills and knowledge in musculoskeletal sonography.

Objectives of this website

The educational content of this website provides participants with key knowledge and methodological principles in musculoskeletal sonography.
Particular attention is paid to sonographic signs both in normal subjects and in various important rheumatic pathologies.

The key areas within the website include:
  • Interactive 3D anatomical models with corresponding sonographic images to aid orientation
  • Examples of normal and pathological sonographic images with expert comments
  • Specific interactive software supporting the self-learning process allowing participants to load their own sonographic images for expert comment
  • Self-test
  • forum
  • Slide Kits
  • Library of musculoskeletal sonography references and bibliography

We commend this website to anyone inspired to embark upon the study of musculoskeletal sonography, particularly those who have very limited exposure to expert sonographers. If the widely held belief that constructive criticism from a tutor is one of the best approaches to fostering individual skills in musculoskeletal sonography, this web- based forum begins to address this fundamental issue.
